Weekend Backpacking Gear List – Personal

Having the right gear for any adventure is paramount.  The goal of this list is to help you pack for a weekend backpacking trip.  This list is just the basics and you may need to expand or customize this list after you've spent a few weekends on the trail.  You will also want to add any personal toiletries items you may need. For instance if you wear contact lenses, you will want to be sure to pack your contact care items.

  • Required
    • 1 set of hiking clothes - season and climate appropriate
      • Summer: t-shirt, shorts, underwear
      • You will need to adjust this based on the time of year and location.
    • 1 set of camping clothes - season and climate appropriate
      • Typically a duplicate of the trail clothes, plus thermals or a fleece jacket.  Again, this all depends on the climate and season.
    • Bowl/cup/spoon
    • Camp shoes/sandals/camp socks
      • I prefer a light weight shoe with socks as they provide more foot coverage than sandals.  A foot injury will quickly end your trip, trust me I've been there.
    • Hiking boots/shoes
      • You will also want hiking socks and possibly sock liners
    • Sleeping Bag (climate appropriate)
    • Sleeping pad, I prefer an air mattress if it doesn't go below freezing.  If it does, I use a closed cell foam pad
      • Air mattress patch kit
    • Matches/lighter
    • Map/compass
    • Hat
      • again, climate appropriate. You may want a wide brimmed hat for warmer weather and something warm for cooler weather or night time.
    • Head lamp
    • Toiletries
      • Toothbrush/toothpaste
      • Foot powder
      • Deodorant

      • Bath Wipes
    • Rain Jacket/Pants
    • Sunglasses
    • Towel
    • Bear Spray (if in Bear Country)
    • Emergency Kit
    • Pack Cover
    • Backpack

  • Optional
    • Trekking poles
    • Camera
    • Journal/pen
    • GPS
    • Book
